KEEP WALES SAFE: GUIDANCE FOR TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES
Guidance for tourism and hospitality businesses to keep employees and
visitors safe during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Please ensure
that you are aware of and following the updated UKHospitality Wales
Guidance [6]in addition to the Guidance for Tourism and Hospitality

KEEP WALES SAFE: FACE COVERINGS
Face coverings are still required in indoor public places and on public
transport, and social distancing still applies indoors.

KEEPING VISITORS AND WALES SAFE THIS SUMMER
At an online session hosted by Visit Wales, tourism businesses had the
opportunity to hear from the RNLI and Adventure Smart UK on how to help
guests and visitors stay safer in the outdoors this summer.

questions raised, and useful safety information and toolkits on the

WORLD DROWNING PREVENTION DAY – 25 JULY 2021
This Sunday 25 July, the RNLI will be marking the first ever World
Drowning Prevention Day – created by the UN to officially recognise
that drowning is an important international issue. Use your social

in the outdoors this summer:

ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS AND KEEP WALES SAFE THIS SUMMER SAYS ECONOMY MINISTER
As the summer holidays begin, Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething has
visited (Thursday 15 July) Dŵr Cymru’s Llys y Frân Lake in
Pembrokeshire to officially open its newly redeveloped visitor
attraction and recreational facilities.
The new development will be a boost for the regional economy as it
provides facilities where people can participate in water-based
activities and new land-based activities. The project was backed with
£1.7 million of European Regional Development Funds through the Welsh
Government.

FREE BESPOKE SERVICE FOR EMPLOYERS: DISABLED PEOPLE’S EMPLOYMENT
CHAMPIONS
The Welsh Government has employed a network of Disabled People’s
Employment Champions, supported by Business Wales Disabled People’s
Employment Advisors, to provide advice, information and support to
employers across Wales.
Any business in Wales interested in increasing the diversity of their
workforce and finding out more about the many benefits of and support
available for employing disabled people can contact the Champions at:

DEPUTY MINISTER ISSUES “NATIONAL CALL TO ARMS” TO PLANT MORE TREES
The Deputy Minister for Climate Change Lee Waters issued a “national
call to arms” to ask the people of Wales to help to deliver real
change to tackle the climate emergency.
According to the Climate Change Committee, Wales needs to plant around
86 million trees over the next nine years to achieve its ambition of
reaching net zero by 2050. The Deputy Minister was visiting Stump up
for Trees a small charity planting 100,000 native broadleaf trees in an
area called Bryn Arw, near Abergavenny – it is the first significant
tree planting on common land in Wales.

NATIONAL FOREST FOR WALES: STAKEHOLDER TOOLKIT

as we launch The Woodland Investment Grant (TWIG). We are encouraging

Investment Grant (TWIG) as part of the National Forest for Wales
Programme – a connected network of forests which will span the length
of Wales.

COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL WALES BECOMES THE FOCAL POINT FOR THE WORLD
OF FOOD AND DRINK
The countdown is on with less than 100 days to go until the return of
Wales’s largest international food and drink event,
BlasCymru/TasteWales. Organised by Food and Drink Wales, the Welsh
Government’s Food Division, Blas Cymru is a national and international
trade event and conference, providing an opportunity for buyers and
producers to develop new business.
BlasCymru/TasteWales 2021 [23] held at the International Convention
Centre (ICC Wales), The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport on 27 & 28 October
2021, is a two-day event and will allow food buyers and industry
professionals to meet with leading Welsh food and drink businesses. The
event will be approximately fifty per cent in person and fifty per cent
virtual.

NEW PLAN TO HELP SEE MORE WELSH FOOD AND DRINK PRODUCTS ON RETAILERS’
SHELVES
A new plan to help food and drink companies across Wales get their
products on the shelves of major retailers was launched by the Welsh
Government on 21 July.
The Food and Drink Wales Retail Plan has been developed alongside an
industry expert group and aims to see the turnover value for the food
and drink industry in Wales grow proportionally more than the UK as a
whole. It has eight key objectives including creating a stream of new
entrepreneurial food and drink businesses and accelerate the growth of
companies with a turnover of more than £10m in the retail sector.

WORKING IN HOT TEMPERATURES GUIDANCE
With temperatures soaring in parts of Wales this week, make sure you
have the right advice and guidance to work safely. It is important to
remember the risks of overheating when working in hot conditions. The
Health and Safety Executive has plenty of guidance on workplace
temperature.

PROTECTING YOUNG PEOPLE AT WORK
When employing a young person under the age of 18, employers have the
same responsibilities for their health, safety and welfare as they do
for other employees. Young people are more likely to be new to the
workplace and could be facing unfamiliar risks. Workers are as likely to
have an accident in the first six months at a workplace as they are
during the whole of the rest of their working life. The Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) have a wide range of relevant guidance available.

CHANGES TO RIGHT TO WORK CHECKS FROM 1 JULY 2021
Following the deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme, the
process for completing right-to-work checks on EU, EEA, and Swiss
citizens has now changed. Employers can no longer accept EU passports or
ID cards as valid proof of right-to-work, with the exception of Irish
citizens. Instead, you need to check a job applicant’s right to work
online using a share code and their date of birth.

UK GOVERNMENT FUND OPENS FOR BIDS FROM COMMUNITIES ACROSS WALES
People across Wales will have the chance to become owners of at-risk
local pubs, theatres, post offices, sports grounds and corner shops with
the launch of the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund, which will
see more than £7m set aside for projects in Wales.
The fund will run over four years (until 2024/2025). There will be
multiple bidding rounds. The first opened on 15 July 2021 and closes on
13 August 2021. Voluntary and community organisations can bid for match
funding.

SALE OF HALOGEN LIGHT BULBS WILL BE BANNED FROM SEPTEMBER 2021
The UK Government has announced plans to end the sale of halogen light
bulbs from this September 2021, as part of the UK’s wider efforts to
tackle climate change. Legislation being brought forward will also
include the removal of fluorescent lights from shelves from September
2023.
